The Waters MicroMass ZQ is a quadrupole mass analyzer designed to determine the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) of diverse analytes. Through an HPLC system or syringe pump, the MicroMass ZQ delivers a liquid sample to the instrument’s analyzer source. From there, sample molecules are ionized one of two modes: electrospray (ESI) or atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI). In ESI mode, sample molecules ionize in the solution before they reach the source and begin a desolvation process on entering the evacuated source. In APCI mode, an electrical discharge inside the source ionizes the sample molecules whereupon they undergo desolvation. Once the ions reach the quadrupole, they are separated according to their mass-to-charge ratios. A photomultiplier then detects the mass-separated ions, amplifies their signals, and sends the mass information to the data system.
